I Just Went Into Advanced Email Marketing Teritory: How Not Using Burner Domains Burned Our Campaigns and What You Can Learn from It

June 20, 20244 min read

What if I told you that some detail you overlooked in your email marketing strategy can cost you thousands of potential customers? This was a reality for me, when I had to help a client of mine send out 10,000 cold emails per month!

Documenting this journey, I faced different challenges, and the crucial lessons I learned about burner domains, sender reputation, and list hygiene - I will be sharing here.

Part 1: Introduction to Burner Domains

Before we can dive into insights, let's discuss the basics.

  • What are Burner Domains? Burner domains are temporary email domains used to test and improve email deliverability without risking your primary domain's reputation.

  • The Role of Burner Domains in Email Marketing They help you maintain a good sender reputation by isolating your main domain from potential spam complaints and deliverability issues.

I needed to reach out to people who might need our services. It’s legal to attempt to communicate with cold prospects as long as they haven’t explicitly told you to stop. Maintaining a good sender reputation was crucial, and using burner domains provided a safeguard in case the campaigns didn't perform well.

Part 2: My Experience with Email Campaigns

The idea was simple: more contacts, more customers.
I crafted the best sales emails, packed with compelling offers, and sent them to a massive list of potential customers. It was ready, but the concept was so simple.

Email ISPs would stop you from sending to emails improperly. Email ISPs don't like spammers, and while you're the new kid on the block sending emails, they will consider you a spammer until you prove that you're not.

And if you don't do what proper email marketers do, you will look like a spammer to Email ISPs and therefore be treated like a spammer. It's important to send only emails that recipients would like to see in their email.

The Unexpected Outcome

Despite the effort, only a few people opened the emails, and many marked them as spam. This was disheartening because I had put so much thought into the content and offers. I had to stop the bulk send process as complaints had started to climb.

But here’s the hard truth: no matter how great your email looks or how compelling your offer is, if it lands in the spam folder, it’s as good as invisible. I quickly realized that my approach needed a serious overhaul. The ISPs were filtering out my emails because they didn't trust the sender.

To them, I was just another potential spammer flooding inboxes. This experience taught me that without the right strategies, even the most well-intentioned campaigns can fall flat.

Part 3: The Challenge of Sending 10,000 Cold Emails per Month

  • Facing the Reality Sending 10,000 cold emails every month taught me the hard way about the importance of sender reputation, list hygiene, and best practices.

Key terms

Sender Reputation: This refers to the credibility of your email-sending IP address. A good sender reputation ensures your emails land in the inbox rather than the spam folder.

List Hygiene: This involves regularly cleaning your email list to remove invalid or unengaged contacts. It helps maintain high engagement rates and avoid spam traps.

Best Practices: These include strategies like personalizing emails, using clear and compelling subject lines, and ensuring compliance with email regulations (e.g., CAN-SPAM Act).

Part 4: The Pitfalls of Not Using Burner Domains

  • Why Emails Ended Up in Spam Without burner domains, my emails frequently landed in spam folders, drastically reducing their effectiveness.

  • Consequences of Poor Email Deliverability Poor deliverability led to wasted resources and missed opportunities.

Part 5: Learning and Optimization

  • Understanding the Issue I analyzed the problem and realized the need for a better strategy.

  • Implementing Burner Domains Introducing burner domains improved my email deliverability and overall campaign success.

  • Tips and Best Practices

    • Regularly clean your email list.

    • Use burner domains for testing.

    • Monitor and maintain your sender reputation.

    • Personalize emails and use compelling subject lines.

What conclusion it boils down to

By sharing my journey, I hope you can avoid the same mistakes and optimize your email marketing strategy. Understanding the importance of burner domains, sender reputation, and list hygiene is crucial for successful campaigns. Let’s enhance our email strategies together and ensure our messages reach the right audience.
