When God Withholds — Lessons for Entrepreneurs of Faith
Serving Christ as an Entrepreneur
Talking about Christ and entrepreneurship is emotional for me. Because I’m not perfect. Far from it.
I make mistakes — not just in business, but in front of God. I get angry. I doubt. I sin. There are moments I even question Him. I’ve asked, “God, why haven’t You blessed me yet? Why haven’t You answered my prayers?”
And the irony is, I’ve already dedicated those very dreams to Him. I’ve told Him, “Lord, this is for You.” And still, the waiting continues.
But as I’ve walked with God through both business and faith, I’ve come to realize something beautiful — God’s delays are not denials. They are lessons.
We often say “God has a purpose,” but few of us pause to understand what that truly means. It’s not just a comforting phrase — it’s a call to trust.
Our True Purpose Isn’t Just Success — It’s Stewardship
In Genesis, when God created Adam and Eve, He gave them a mission before anything else: to be fruitful, multiply, and have dominion over the earth. That was the first command — stewardship.
God wanted to work through us, not just for us. He made us stewards of His creation, not owners of it. Even our businesses, our bodies, our time, and our talents — they’re not really ours. They’re His.
We’re simply managers.
And when you look at life through that lens, entrepreneurship changes meaning. It’s no longer about building your empire. It’s about managing His resources well.
But here’s the thing — before God can entrust you with greater responsibility, He first tests your faith. He prepares your heart before He expands your reach.
That’s the first reason why, sometimes, God doesn’t give us what we ask for.
1. God Delays Blessings to Build Relationship and Faith
Faith and relationship go hand in hand. You can’t trust someone you don’t know, and you can’t know someone without relationship.
It’s like giving your credit card to a stranger. You wouldn’t do it, right? But if it’s your spouse — you’d hand it over without hesitation. Why? Because you know her. You trust her.
That’s what God desires from us — that kind of relationship. He wants us to talk to Him, rely on Him, and walk with Him daily.
Sometimes, God withholds blessings simply because He wants us to seek Him, not just His gifts. He wants us to desire the Giver, not the gift.
When you pray for business growth, financial breakthrough, or opportunities, and it doesn’t happen — maybe it’s not rejection. Maybe it’s an invitation.
An invitation to pray more. To listen more. To trust deeper.
Because faith without relationship is fragile. And relationship without faith is shallow.
2. God Withholds So We Learn to Submit to His Plans
Entrepreneurs are visionaries. We plan, we dream, we execute. But sometimes, our plans don’t align with God’s. And when things fall apart, our instinct is to blame Him.
But more often than not, the pain we feel is the result of our own detour.
Look at Naomi’s story in the Book of Ruth. She left Bethlehem — the “House of Bread” — to live in Moab, a land that didn’t serve the true God. There, she lost everything — her husband, her sons, her wealth. And when she returned, she said, “The Lord has dealt bitterly with me.”
But it wasn’t God who abandoned her. It was Naomi who stepped out of His covering.
We do that too. We run our businesses without prayer, chase deals without discernment, and then question God when things collapse. But God isn’t punishing us — He’s calling us back to submission.
He wants us to surrender not because He’s power-hungry, but because He knows what’s best.
We see the moment; He sees eternity. We see the next step; He sees the whole path.
When He says “not yet,” it’s not rejection. It’s protection.
3. God Holds Resources Until We’re Ready to Handle Them
This one hit me deeply.
Imagine you’re a plumbing company. You have pipes that carry water from a lake to a city. But your pipes are full of leaks. The water keeps spilling before it reaches the destination.
Now imagine God as the Mayor of that city. Would He invest in your plumbing if it’s leaking everywhere? Or would He wait until you fix the system before He sends the water?
That’s what happens when God withholds resources. It’s not punishment. It’s preparation.
He’s not ignoring your prayers — He’s protecting His resources until your “pipes” can handle the pressure.
Your pipes represent your character, your integrity, your discipline, and your faith.
Because God isn’t just blessing you for you. He’s blessing you for His mission.
Remember the parable of the talents? The master gave more to the servant who produced more — not because he was greedy, but because he could be trusted. The goal wasn’t favoritism; it was effectiveness.
God is a strategic investor. He gives more to those who multiply what they’ve already been given.
And it’s not because He loves others more — it’s because He knows the urgency of His mission.
“The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.”
Time is short. People are lost. The gospel needs to spread. God needs faithful entrepreneurs — people who will multiply their time, treasure, and talent for the Kingdom.
That’s why He holds back from some of us — not forever, but until we’re ready to carry the weight of what we’re asking for.
He’s not saying “no.” He’s saying, “Fix your leaks first.”
The Urgency of the Mission
We live in a world that’s running out of time.
People are dying without knowing Christ. Entire generations are being discipled by culture, not by faith. The Great Commission isn’t just a Sunday verse — it’s an urgent call.
And as entrepreneurs, we play a huge role in that. God uses business as a mission field. He uses influence as a ministry. He uses success as a tool for service.
That’s why stewardship matters. Because when your business prospers, His Kingdom advances.
When you use your platform to serve people and glorify God, He multiplies your reach — not for fame, but for purpose.
And when He can trust you to pour into others instead of leaking blessings through pride or greed, He will open the floodgates.
Trusting the Process
I used to think success was proof of God’s favor. Now I see that obedience is.
God doesn’t measure your worth by your revenue, followers, or influence. He measures your faithfulness.
So if you’re in a season where things feel slow, don’t be discouraged. Maybe He’s fixing your pipes. Maybe He’s strengthening your character. Maybe He’s deepening your relationship with Him.
Because God’s blessings don’t just come when you’re ready to receive them — they come when you’re ready to steward them.
He will never waste a blessing on someone who isn’t prepared to protect it.
Final Thoughts
If you feel like God is holding something back right now — don’t lose heart.
He’s not punishing you. He’s positioning you.
He’s building your faith. He’s aligning your heart with His will. And He’s making sure that when He finally pours out His blessings, nothing leaks.
Serve Him through your business. Build with integrity. Steward your time, your talent, and your treasure.
Because when your work becomes your worship, and your success becomes your service — that’s when you’ll see what it truly means to be an entrepreneur for Christ.
